Federal bankruptcy court experience, and published scholarship on how boards and regulators act when the risk in front of them cannot be measured.
My work has centered on insolvency and the courts. I spent a summer drafting summary judgments and memoranda on complicated bankruptcy issues for a federal bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of Texas, externed at a California appellate court and an Illinois circuit court, and spent a clinic semester counseling university startups on trademark strategy.
Before law I spent eight years studying how images and institutions persuade: a master's in the history of art and architecture at Boston University, and a bachelor's in advertising at Soochow University, followed by a curatorial summer at the Asheville Art Museum and nearly two years of provenance research and client service at Christie's in New York. Provenance work is close reading of a record — who owned a thing, when, and on what evidence. It taught me to read slowly, and to write for the person who has to decide.
That interest followed me into law school. My student note, published in the University of Illinois Journal of Law, Technology & Policy, examines cyber-threats and self-dealing in the commercial art world. With Professor Arden Rowell I have also worked extensively in administrative law and statutory interpretation, most recently on managing uncertainty in nuclear energy regulation.
